This Ramadan, the annual IGP Ramadan Readings will focus on Shaykh Ahmed Ibn 'Ajiba's Al-Bahr al-Madid along with selected insights from several other texts. Al-Bahr al-Madid is widely recognized as one of the great works of tafsir in the Islamic tradition, especially from the last few hundred years. Unlike most earlier works of tafsir, this text discusses both the outward and inner meanings of each verse in depth, helping the reader to better understand the relationship between what is apparent and what is hidden in the Book of Allah. At the same time, Shaykh Ibn 'Ajiba generally does not focus on the technical aspects of the Arabic language, thus making this work more accessible for non-Arabic speakers.

Over 10 sessions, Shaykh Ahmed El Azhary will guide us in a reading and discussion of selected sections of IGP's new translation of Al-Bahr al-Madid: Juz 'Amma. This course will focus on the Surahs of the Qur'an that are most commonly memorized and recited in prayer. Through Ibn 'Ajiba's work, Shaykh Ahmed will help us to better understand the relationship between external and internal meanings of the Qur'an, according to the consensus of the scholars of the Ahl al-Sunnah w'al Jama'at.

This course promises to provide a glimpse into the intricate layers of meaning contained within the Qur'an. It is suitable for any mature Muslim.

This course will include the following:

  • Ten live sessions held via Zoom
  • Time for Q&A in each class session
  • PDF ebook edition of IGP's new translation of this Tafsir
  • Access to recordings of all class sessions
  • Invitation to a private Telegram chat with the instructor to facilitate discussion and Q&A
