Prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ are among the most important devotions by which the devout have approached Allah. Due to this, many scholars have written treatises and even books on its rulings and merits. It is also for that reason that Qāḍī 'Iyāḍ devoted to it a section of his celebrated work, al-Shifā’. While the section is short, it provides a valuable entry into such literature, distilling rules and benefits for the seeker in brief expressions and beneficial narrations. We selected this section for quick study and review, which will serve both the busy student and the working professional on the go.
Al-Shifā bi Taʿrīf Ḥuqūq al-Muṣṭafā, directly translated as, ‘The Remedy (or Cure) Through Recognizing the Rights of the Chosen One’, is one of the most celebrated works in the genre of Shamā’il. It stands uniquely amongst the works of Qāḍī ʿIyād as his most celebrated effort with many surviving manuscripts and commentaries found throughout the Islamic world. Shamā’il is a genre of works that deals with the life, characteristics, and descriptions of the Prophet ﷺ and his station.
Al-Shifā, as it is called for short, stands alone as perhaps the most thorough work in this genre, dealing with both the descriptions of the Prophet ﷺ, his station and his perfections, and with the rulings pertaining to one’s belief and treatment of him ﷺ. It is exhaustive in its treatment of the subject, expounding on topics that range from Allah’s praise of the Prophet ﷺ and his status and station before Him, to the obligation of loving him and what that entails. In short, the uniqueness of this work can be attributed to its holistic coverage of the Messenger ﷺ.

Imam al-Tirmidhi's Al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyya contains 414 Hadith that together present a detailed description of the moral, physical and spiritual qualities of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
In 2023, we intend to study the entire Shamail from cover to cover in four quarters.
An ijazah will be granted from Shaykh Ahmed Elazhary to all students who study all four quarters and attend the recital. This ijazah will link students to Imam al-Tirmidhi and, thereon, to Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ.
The first quarter consists of 10 sessions whereby Shaykh Ahmed El Azhary will guide us through a close reading of the Shama'il. This course is designed to give you the following:
Deep knowledge of the character, behaviour, and personal qualities of Allah's Messenger ﷺ
Understanding of why knowledge of the character of the Prophet ﷺ is central for all areas of the religion
Enriched appreciation for the world and the worldview of the Companions رضي الله عنهم and the Early Generations of Muslims
Renewed and strengthened love for Allah's Messenger ﷺ, knowledge of him, and desire to see him in this life and the Next
Understanding the Shama’il is absolutely critical to any proper understanding of Islam, for it details the qualities of the message-bearer, which fundamentally alters how we understand the message he brought.
Quarter 1: January 19th, 2023, to March 16th, 2023 (Every Thursday at 1pm ET, 6pm British)
All sessions will be recorded if you cannot attend live.
This will be a live course held via Zoom. Our instructor will be Shaykh Ahmed El Azhary. Classes will be kept small to allow for participation and questions. Students will be invited to join a private Telegram chat group with the teacher to facilitate further discussion and inquiry.

Blackness & Islam
Muslims speak of Islam in egalitarian terms: the religion of peace, the religion that seeks to elevate man over his base desires, and the religion that does not discriminate based on race and ethnicity. Despite the egalitarian spirit of Islam, the lived reality of many Muslims is very different, and this is most apparent when we observe how Muslims deal with race and ethnicity.
Muslims who are Black in the West, in particular, have found that while Islam may not discriminate based on race, many Muslims do. To make matters worse, some of those Muslims will delve into the Islamic tradition to justify their biases and bigotries, seeing no contradiction between their racism and Islamic ideals.
This work seeks to clarify and debunk some traditions which support their racist positions and presents biographies of early Muslims who were Black. The biographies of these great Muslim personalities show us how Blackness was a normal part of life for early Muslims, in sharp contradistinction to modern prejudices against Black folks found in some Muslim communities.
The Spirits of Black Folk: Sages Through the Ages
These selections fromThe Excellence of Black People (Raf’u Sha’n Al-Ḥubshān)are intended to connect our hearts, minds, and communities to the healing wisdom of preeminent teachers from amongst the Black luminaries of the past who remain largely unknown or ignored.
Imam al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE) delivers this message clearly through his insightful text, which includes the names and unique qualities of the Black Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Qur’anic verses regarding them, a commentary on African words in the Quran and Hadith, and much more.
Like Ibn al-Jawzi before him, al-Suyuti masterfully curated the narrators and narrations in this work to serve as keys to deeper truths, higher understanding, and more meaningful and equitable spiritual practice. The annotations that have been added are meant to facilitate benefitting from these keys.
