This course will be a journey through selections from IGP's The Integrity of the Family and the Role of Parents, a new translation of a short text from Habib Umar b. Hafiz.

This book gives a concise overview of the main responsibilities of parents towards their families. It also addresses many of the unique challenges and concerns faced by parents today, both in the traditional Islamic world and especially in the West.

Over the course of 5 classes, Ustadh Talut Dawood will help us to explore specific themes of this book in greater depth, with a special focus on:

  • What is Allah's "System of Successorship"
  • Parenting in the Seerah and the model of the Prophetic Household
  • Practical strategies for raising and educating Muslim children today

This course will likely be more interactive than the majority of IGP classes, as parents will be encouraged to share their own experiences, techniques, and approaches to the various aspects of raising children in the modern world. The course text will serve as a framework to inform our class discussion, and to provide motivation and inspiration to help us all to renew our commitment to this sacred responsibility. It is our hope that all students will come away with one or more new ideas to apply in our own individual households and families.

Syllabus:

  • Session 1 - Understanding Allah's "System of Successorship" and child-rearing from a Divine perspective
  • Session 2 - The central importance of marriage in raising children
  • Session 3 - The household of the Prophet ﷺ and the model of the ideal home
  • Session 4 - The education of children: Practical strategies for today's parents, part 1
  • Session 5 - The education of children: Practical strategies for today's parents, part 2
