This course will be a close reading & discussion of Fundamental Principles of Tasawwuf, a new translation of an abridgement of Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq's Principles of Tasawwuf (Qawa'id al-Tasawwuf).

This course is not focused on any particular spiritual path, but rather on principles that apply across all spiritual paths. Subjects covered will include everything from the definition of Tasawwuf, to the definition of some of its major concepts, to the detailed rulings on these concepts, and more. Some key themes this course will explore include:

  • The relationship between faith, jurisprudence, and spirituality
  • The perils of extremism in worship and the necessity of balance in religious practice
  • The conditions for sincerity in remembrance (dhikr), and the transformative power of seeking Allah through His remembrance
  • The role of mentorship and the necessity of a guide on the spiritual path
  • Humility, ethical conduct, and adherence to the prophetic way in dealing with oneself and others

In an era of spiritual confusion and material distraction, this course will be designed to help students understand and implement a framework to attain clarity and sincerity in faith while fully engaged with the practical realities of everyday life.

Course schedule: Every Thursday at 11AM ET a new lesson is released until the end starting Jan 6th.
