Losing and Healing

Some losses arrive without warning. One moment life is familiar, and the next, the same rooms feel different. Knowledge of death offers no immunity from the ache. The price of life is loss, and no soul is exempt from it.

Losing and Healing was born from that space. After his beloved brother, Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥīm Waheed, passed away, the author gathered the verses, Hadiths, and teachings of the pious predecessors that carried his family through the weight of grief. The result is written from within the valley by someone who has had to keep walking while carrying something heavy.

Across fourteen chapters, this book traces the journey of the soul from the body's last breath to the meeting with Allah. It explores the stages of life, the burial and the questioning of the grave, the gathering of pious souls, the comfort our deeds bring to those who have gone ahead, and the dreams in which the living and the deceased still meet. It also turns the heart towards the living, offering a way to change our lens on loss, deepen certitude, and prepare for a good ending.

If you have lost someone you love, may these pages meet you with the reassuring breeze of sakīnah. We belong to Allah, and to Him we return. In that return, there is only homecoming.

About the Author

Mufti Abdul Rahman Waheed was born and raised in Lansing, MI. As a youth, he displayed zeal and enthusiasm to involve himself in the religious sciences. At just 9 years of age, Mufti Abdul Rahman went to Toronto, Canada to pursue his dreams of becoming a Hafidh of the Holy Qur'an. Thereafter, Mufti Abdul Rahman traveled to Pakistan to continue his passion to seek knowledge where he completed his 2 year Iftaa program which specializes in Islamic Jurisprudence and Law. Mufti Abdul Rahman is serving as a principal and is a full-time instructor at Michigan Islamic Institute, the brother organization of Miftaah Institute. He travels across North America as a khateeb and lecturer. He is well-known for his calm and down-to-Earth demeanor.
