The Art of Learning
Regular price $16.99The Art of Learning is a translation of Taʿlīm al-Mutaʿallim Ṭarīq al-Taʿallum by Imām Burhān al-Dīn al-Zarnūjī. Written over 800 years ago, this book is a timeless masterpiece on the pursuit of knowledge, self-discipline, and spiritual growth. It remains in use throughout the world today as a source of guidance for students and educators alike to understand and the ethical and spiritual foundations necessary for true intellectual development.
Al-Zarnūjī believed that true learning requires both intellectual effort and spiritual refinement. In this treatise, he emphasizes the ethical and spiritual foundations necessary for true intellectual development. Drawing from the Qur’an, Prophetic teachings, and Islamic tradition, he presents a holistic approach to education that nurtures both the intellect and the soul. The Art of Learning is much more than a manual for ʿilmī success; it is a profound exploration of the principles of ihsan through a discussion of the moral and spiritual responsibilities of seeking knowledge. Al-Zarnūjī reminds us that true learning goes beyond the accumulation of facts and information — it is a lifelong journey of character refinement, humility, and khidma (service) to others.
Though little is known about his life, al-Zarnūjī’s legacy rests primarily on his treatise Taʿlīm al-Mutaʿallim Ṭarīq al-Taʿallum. The work is divided into several chapters, covering key aspects of the educational process, including the merits and purpose of knowledge, the importance of intention, selecting a teacher and companions, respect for knowledge, perseverance, and the spiritual dimensions of learning such as sincerity, humility, and trust in Allah (tawakkul). Due to its comprehensive and concise treatment of the subject, this work is widely considered to be a foundational text in Islamic pedagogy.
